Getting to Tecate from Tijuana

Portada tecate

Looking for a quick escape from the city?

Tecate might be exactly what you need. Located just east of Tijuana, this charming Pueblo Mágico offers a completely different side of Baja California — a slower pace, mountain views, traditional bakeries, local restaurants, outdoor adventures, and plenty of small-town charm.

Tecate is located about 45 km (28 miles) from Tijuana, and depending on traffic, the trip can take anywhere from 45 minutes to about an hour and a half.
Whether you’re planning a relaxing day trip or a weekend getaway, here are the best ways to get from Tijuana to Tecate:

tecate by car

The easiest and most flexible way to visit Tecate is definitely by car. Whether you decide to rent a car or bring your own. Driving allows you to explore the city at your own pace, stop for food, visit different attractions, and check out nearby places like La Rumorosa, wineries, ranches, and nature spots.

The drive usually takes around 40–60 minutes, but it can take closer to 1.5 hours depending on traffic, holidays, and your starting point in Tijuana.

Having your own car is especially useful because many of Tecate’s attractions are spread out and not everything is within walking distance.

Good to know: Uber is usually not the best option for this trip. While it may appear available, there are fewer drivers willing to travel between cities, and prices can be much higher than a normal local ride.

If you don’t want to drive, taking a bus is a comfortable and affordable option.

You can take an Uber or taxi to the Central de Autobuses de Tijuana (Tijuana Bus Station), where buses depart to Tecate throughout the day.

Most buses are comfortable and include air conditioning, making it an easy ride where you can just sit back and enjoy the trip.

Tickets usually cost around $120–180 MXN one way (prices may vary). You can buy your ticket directly at the bus station or check schedules and purchase online through: https://www.busbud.com/tijuana-tecate (TJgram)

This is a good option if you’re mainly planning to visit downtown Tecate, walk around the plaza, eat, and enjoy the Pueblo Mágico atmosphere.

tecate by train

For something completely different, you can take the Tren Turístico Tijuana–Tecate — a scenic train experience that connects both cities while showing you a different side of Baja California.

Unlike regular transportation, this train does not run daily. It operates on selected dates and seasons, so you need to plan ahead and check availability.

The train usually departs from Estación García in Tijuana and travels toward the Tecate Train Station.

Along the way, the experience may include:

  • Scenic stops for photos 📸
  • Mountain landscapes 🌄
  • Historical information about the route
  • Entertainment onboard 🎶

Once you arrive in Tecate, visitors usually have several hours to explore the city, visit the main plaza, try the famous Tecate bread, and enjoy local food.

Tickets are approximately $550 MXN per adult and usually include the round trip and onboard experience.

Because seats are limited and dates sell out, check upcoming departures and ticket information through ADMICARGA BC or on socials @admicargabc, before planning your trip.
