Weather in Tijuana

Weather image

Tijuana has a mild Mediterranean climate influenced by the Pacific Ocean. This makes the city relatively comfortable to visit year-round, but certain seasons may be more appealing depending on the traveler’s preferences.

Best Time to Visit

The best months to visit Tijuana are March–May (spring) and September–November (fall). The weather is mild, stable, and perfect for sightseeing, outdoor dining, and exploring nearby attractions. Travelers in fall should be aware of possible Santa Ana winds, but overall it remains one of the most enjoyable seasons. Winter is fine for visits as long as travelers plan for rainy days.

Seasons in Tijuana

  • Spring (March–May): One of the most pleasant times to visit. Temperatures are moderate, the days are sunny, and rain is less frequent. Ideal for outdoor activities and cultural events.
  • Summer (June–August): Warm but not extreme for most of the season, with average highs between 25–30°C (77–86°F). However, heat waves can occasionally push temperatures close to 40°C (104°F), setting record highs. Mornings may bring coastal fog, while afternoons are usually sunny and dry.
  • Fall (September–November): Another great season with stable, warm weather. September still feels like summer, while October and November bring cooler evenings. This is also the period when Santa Ana winds may occur. Dry, hot winds blowing from the desert toward the coast, which can make temperatures rise suddenly and increase fire risk. Despite this, fall is a very popular season to visit, especially with wine festivals in the nearby Valle de Guadalupe.
  • Winter (December–February): Mild but wetter, with most annual rainfall happening during these months. While daytime temperatures remain comfortable, heavy rains can cause road flooding in some areas.

Weather Considerations

  • Rainy Season: December–March, with occasional storms and localized flooding;
  • Extreme Heat: Though uncommon, record-breaking highs near 40°C (104°F) can occur, especially in late summer and early fall.
  • Santa Ana Winds: From September to November, strong, dry winds from inland deserts can affect the city, bringing warmer temperatures, lower humidity, and sometimes dusty conditions.
  • Unpredictability: Conditions can change quickly, sun in the morning, fog or cool breezes in the evening.
  • Local Tip: Residents dress in layers and carry a light jacket year-round.
