The México Monument, also popularly known as “Las Tijeras” (The Scissors) or “El Monumento al Fierro,” is an iconic sculpture located at Glorieta Independencia on Paseo de los Héroes in Tijuana’s Zona Río. Created by renowned sculptor Ángela Gurría in the 1970s as a tribute to Mexico’s mestizaje and independence, it was originally a large metal structure shaped like a stylized “M.” After years of exposure and oxidation, a metal covering was added during the administration of Ernesto Ruffo Appel, earning it the nickname “Las Tijeras.” Today, it stands as a city landmark and reference point for locals, surrounded by the Tijuana Cultural Center, Plaza Río, and corporate buildings, and occasionally serves as a venue for cultural events and public gatherings.
